PDO Problems in 0.8.0

posted on 03 September, 2008 by torsten

Since release day I get flooded with mails and forum posts that report installing and update problems...

I'm very unhappy with this situation and so I decided to make the PDO support in Kimai an *option* not the *default*. 0.8.1 will work with normal MySQL again. This means a lot of extra work and may take about a month. I appollogize for all the inconvinience this whole mess caused to many users! Please only upgrade to 0.8.0 when you are experienced with PHP and server-configurations. It hurts me - but for all others it's better to wait for the coming version... Sorry! :(

that's too bad, using PDO makes sense but you're right about the server configuration, it could be difficult for some. I appreciate your effort trying to accomodate for those having PDO issue by converting back to normal MySQL. As for me, I'm using PDO 0.8, YAY! :) Looking forward to the upcoming version, specially, the reporting part ;p

thanks, Torsten!

Thanks Benny - I can really use some cheering words ;)
Oh - did you see the simplestats hack that I posted on the download page? That thing is really good I think ... used that with 0.7 since *ever* ;)

One bright spot: still works just great with XAMPP! I just found your site this afternoon, and 15 minutes later I was up and running, and absolutely delighted - this is exactly what I needed. I too look forward to future developments.

Thanks!

Glad to hear that! Yesterday night the translation of the database-layer was finished for using pure MySQL. But I'm not in a hurry to make it public. First the new step-by-step installer needs a closer look on. I'm also planning to put an (at least for me...) important feature back in which already was introduced with 0.7.13 ... Surprise, surprise ... :D

Update: I just did a fresh install of an opensuse LAMP server, and PDO support was already included - cool.

Only difficulty I had was having to enable short tag support in php.ini - it's disabled by default, and you use some short tags in /installer/index.php (and that's just where it logged the error - I didn't look at any other files.) Confused me for a bit :-)

It's already fixed in the svn-repo. Normally I really don't use short tags ... O-o

I just found this today and it's AWESOME!!!
Please keep working on it and I'll do my part spreading the word.
Ok back to Kimai!

Just stopping by to say Hi.

any good news soon, torsten? :)

Torsten Höltge wrote at 07.24.09, 21:49:

Hi Beny!
Good news is - I got the pure-mysql db-layer working in most parts. There is still some debugging to do but not too much. Bad news is - I have loads of other work to do first... My guess (at this time) is that 0.8.1 may release mid of november... maybe earlier ... I can't really tell yet.

Very nice to hear that! The blog was not updated for awhile so I thought I asked about the next release. :P
Thank you for the update, Torsten!

Well it's not the only bug in this software :
- downloaded the homepage featured version (the zip says kimai_0.8.0.732.zip)
- unzip it in a folder under www in wamp (with pdo activated)
- launched the site : boom
- needed to fix 2 syntax errors (!) in the installer/index.php (missing php on lines 71 and 99)
- followed the install assistant : boom
- I've got now a white screen of death when I try to access kimai (I mean an empty webpage)... and have no courage to see what's wrong, I'll stick to Klok.

Sorry to say, but not really ready for the prime time...

Should we expect an update release on Christmas? :)

Torsten Höltge wrote at 07.24.09, 21:49:

Hi Beny! Always nice to see you coming around ;) I had a long pause coding on Kimai... I couldn't find the motivation to continue. It's also because I have very little time because of 'real' jobs... When you come home from 10 hours work you don't always like to sit down and do 6 more for 'fun', right? ;) At present Kimai sucks a bit because there are many fatal bugs at once in the current version and basically I'm the only person working on that. I wished some more devs would stumble over the project, liked it and were willing to contribute. But I pretty much lost hope about that ... Meaning development will keep pretty slow. I can't change it ... I can't really tell when the update will come. Actually I already missed my own deadline for the non-pdo db-layer.

Don't lose hope, it's an excellent application and check your email ;)
